TV STAR AND WRITER VICTOR LEWIS-SMITH DIES AGED 65 AFTER SHORT ILLNESS
Writer, broadcaster, and satirist Victor Lewis-Smith has died aged 65 after a short illness, his agent confirmed.
‘I am in deep shock, having to issue the news about the death of Victor Lewis Smith,’ they wrote on social media.
‘Struggling to come to terms with the loss of a unique and irreplaceable talent.’
Lewis-Smith served as an executive producer for the Sky Arts series In Confidence, which was made up of one-to-one interviews featuring leading figures from the arts, including the likes of Richard Dawkins, Kathy Burke, and Lily Allen.
He owned the film, television, and radio production company Associated Rediffusion Productions Limited, acquiring the rights in 1990, to the name and logo of the original company, Associated-Rediffusion.
The company made two series of the comedy show Victor Lewis-Smith for BBC Radio 1, for which he won a best comedy radio programme award in the 1990 British Comedy Awards.
These programmes are noted for their prank calls targeting high-profile figures such as Princess Diana, which influenced Kayvan Novak and Sacha Baron Cohen.
In 1996, Lewis-Smith posed as astrophysicist Stephen Hawking using the same electronic voice technology as the professor to hoax Diana.
Their conversation, covering the now King and the Clinton family, was released in its entirety in 2015 after being kept in a safe for two decades
Lewis-Smith was also behind the ITV1 Annual National Food & Drink Awards, which was hosted by Stephen Fry in 2020.
Over the course of his career, Lewis-Smith also starred in a number of TV shows throughout his career, including Inside Victor Lewis-Smith in 1993, TV Offal on Channel 4, and Z For Fake on BBC Two.
His final production, Hitler’s Jazz Band, will be broadcast by Sky Arts on December 14 at 9pm.
He is survived by his wife Virginia and his daughter Lucia.
