Resident reveals they feel 'uneasy' amid aftershocks

One local took to X to share their fears following the strong tremors that shook the Kushiro region. This resident described the initial shakes and subsequent aftershocks.

They wrote: "The shaking of the earthquake just now felt stronger than its seismic intensity, and most importantly, lasted longer. There are aftershocks and I feel kind of uneasy.

"All we can do is hope that the energy is released in small amounts so that nothing serious happens."

No tsunami warning issued

A tsunami warning was thankfully not issued following the large earthquake.

Despite this, waves of less than 0.2 metres are expected so locals have been warned to be careful around water - due to sea level changes.

Major city hit by quake
