Oliviero Toscani, the star Italian photographer most famous for his provocative advertising for the fashion brand Benetton, died on Monday at the age of 82.

"It is with great sadness that we announce that today, January 13, 2025, our beloved Oliviero has embarked on his next journey," a statement signed by his wife and three children said, according to Italian media.

The president of Tuscany, where Toscani last lived, paid tribute to him as a "master of photography and free spirit."

"His genius will continue to inspire us," wrote Eugenio Giani on social media.

Toscani was long Benetton's advertising guru and masterminded several celebrated - and controversial - campaigns during the clothing company's heyday in the 1980s and 1990s.

His advertising work for Benetton included a photograph of a man dying of AIDS, a nun and a priest kissing, an emaciated woman suffering from anorexia, and a series of portraits of US prisoners on death row.

The company ended its collaboration with Toscani in 2020 after he made dismissive remarks about the bridge collapse in the northern Italian city of Genoa that killed 43 people in 2018.

In August, he revealed in an interview that he was suffering from amyloidosis - a rare disease that leads to organ failure. He said he had recently undergone experimental treatment.
