Busisiwe Lurayi dead – Netflix star dies 'suddenly' aged 36
Rising TV star Busisiwe 'Busi' Lurayi has died at the age of 36, her agency has announced.
The South African actress, who first shot to international acclaim in the Netflix comedy mini series How To Ruin Christmas, died at her Johannesburg home on Sunday.
Sharing the sad news via Instagram, her talent agency Eye Media Artists penned a heartfelt tribute to the star as they wrote: “We are deeply saddened to notify you of the passing of our beloved Busisiwe Lurayi.
“Busisiwe passed away suddenly and was pronounced dead at her residence on Sunday 10.07.2022 by medical personnel.”
The agency then went on to reveal that the cause of death had not yet been established and urged fans to respect the privacy of her family and loved ones.
“We humbly request that you allow us as the family to come to terms with this tragic news. We thank you for the support that has been given so far and will provide further information as soon as it has been made available,” they added.
Fans of the star were quick to express their condolences, with many choosing to pay tribute on social media.
“R.I.P. Beautiful Angel condolences to your family Love Always,” wrote one heartbroken fan.
A second also paid their respects, writing: “Her smile and excellent talent will be sorely missed on our screen. Lala ngoxolo ntombi entlec.” (Rest in peace, beautiful girl.)
While a third simply paid tribute with the words: “Rest in peace”
In a statement following the tragic news, Netflix South Africa said: “An incredible light has gone out in the South African entertainment industry.
"We are deeply saddened by the passing of award-winning stage & screen actor Busi Lurayi. We will hold onto the laughs, the beauty & the moments of joy she brought us. #RIPBusiLurayi #HowToRuinChristmas.”
Busi first shot to international fame in 2020 when she played the rebellious Tumi Sello in Netflix’s festive comedy, How To Ruin Christmas.
Spread across three episodes, the tongue-in-cheek mini series followed the exploits of bridesmaid Tumi as she tried to make amends for having accidentally ruined her sister’s Christmas wedding.
The clever writing and enchanting cast made sure it was a firm hit with fans, and the series was even renewed for a second season released in 2021 entitled. How To Ruin Christmas: The Funeral.
Once again, the show drew widespread praise from audiences during its four episode run and was renewed by the streaming giant last month to return for a third series, How to Ruin Christmas: The Baby Shower, prior to her death.
Outside of her Netflix credits, Busi also appeared in a number of series over the years, including South African legal drama Sokhulu & Partners, Wild at Heart, and even a guest appearance in US medical drama ER.
