Adam Thomas sobbed as he had to break the news of his dad's death to friend

Emmerdale's Adam Thomas has opened up about his dad passing away in a heartbreaking Instagram post.

Dougie James was a 70s soul singer who worked with many top music stars including James Brown, Frank Sinatra and Stevie Wonder.

He also featured in ITV show Absolute India: Mancs in Mumbai alongside Adam and his other sons Ryan and Scott.

Adam revealed in an Instagram post how he met someone who used to know his dad who spoke fondly of him and was unaware that he'd died aged 72 in November last year.

Adam said: “He was talking about my dad and how he hadn’t seen him in a while and how my dad would always make him laugh!

“He told me I needed to bring him over as it’s been so long…”

Adam was left stunned by the request.

Adam Thomas talking on a cell phone: Adam also fondly recalled how his dad would always make people feel respected no matter how well he knew them

He said: “It caught me by surprise, because he was talking about my dad in the present and just hearing that felt so good !! but I quickly realized he didn’t know, so had to break the news to him… the gentlemen broke down and sat beside us and started to cry and so did I!!

“The gentleman was not a friend from school or a buddy he used to go the pub with, he was a waiter at the place my dad used to go too!"

Adam also fondly recalled how his dad would always make people feel respected no matter how well he knew them.

He said: "Crying with a stranger at 10am on a Monday morning in front of my wife & kids as we sat down for breakfast, was not something I planned."

After Dougie died his three sons paid tribute to him by performing Drift Away (Give Me The Beat Boys) on Father’s Day.

They sang alongside Adam’s six year old son Teddy in a clip that was shared on Instagram.

The post was captioned: "Happy Father’s Day Dad!! I know you were with us this day dad watching with a big smile on your face."

Adam also tagged his dad in the post, saying: “I know you can’t read this dad and I don’t really know why am sharing this but take from it what you will … but just be nice to people I think is what am trying to say lol x”
