Engelbert Humperdinck says wife's death has 'affected me badly' in heartbreaking chat

Engelbert Humperdinck spoke about the death of his wife Patricia during an appearance on Good Morning Britain on Thursday.

The 85-year-old singer spoke to hosts Kate Garraway and Richard Madeley live from his home in Leicester about his grief and upcoming tour.

As Kate began the interview, she asked the legendary crooner how he is coping to which he replied: "Not bad, not bad. You know the whole family has been in limbo lately because we finally brought her home.

"Since February we've been waiting for the quarantine to go away so we can give her a good final send off in our home in Leicester, and she's finally home now so we're grateful for that."

Patricia sadly passed away in Los Angeles in February this year after contracting Covid-19, and had also battled Alzheimer's disease for a decade.

Commenting on his grief and life without his wife, Engelbert said: "I don't know how it's going to affect me, I have no idea. It's affected me pretty bad so far.

"And I know that I'm going to go out on tour and sing sensitive songs and things like that, but that's my job and I know that's what my wife would want me to do."

He continued: "I’m learning… It's quite difficult being a performer and being out on stage and singing sensitive lyrics - and each lyric can touch your heart in different ways - but it doesn’t matter, it’s my job.

"I’m a thespian of song and I’ve got to go out there and do the best that I can. My fans have been absolutely fantastic. They’ve all been so supportive during this time in my life and I love them all."

Speaking about how he's kept himself busy in recent months, Engelbert added: “So I keep on and I’ve been out in her garden which she used to love.

"She created the whole thing… I’ve been out there doing bits and pieces and hopefully making her happy as she looks at me doing it."

On a more positive note, Engelbert said: "I’m excited about what’s been happening in my life with the MBE, which has been quite wonderful because Her Majesty The Queen has given me the opportunity of putting letters behind my name so it now distinguishes me from the original Engelbert Humperdinck, which is rather lovely!"

Richard ended the chat by asking the singer about his morning routine, to which Engelbert responded: "I do exercise, I haven’t been in the mood for it quite lately but I do keep my body in shape and with that your mind stays healthy."

"I can feel our viewers wishing you well and excited about you going on tour and we wish you well too," Kate added.

Engelbert married Patricia Healey back in 1964, whom he met at a nightclub in Leicester, and they have four children together - Scott, Jason, Louise and Bradley.
