California wildfires latest: Blaze tears through Hollywood Hills - as iconic LA landmarks at risk

Deadly wildfires are burning in multiple parts of Los Angeles, forcing the evacuation of more than 130,000 people and killing five as thousands of homes are engulfed. Follow updates on this live page.

'Truly apocalyptic scenes' as flames swallow homes in LA wildfires evacuation zone

By David Blevins, Sky News correspondent in LA

There was nothing but a stairwell left at one house in Altadena and even that was ablaze.

The flames swallowing homes and cars, and the suffocating smoke, made for truly apocalyptic scenes.

Firefighters tackled a blaze at one property as the resident next door dashed in and out to rescue a few precious items.

People streamed along the street with their lives wrapped up in a blanket of belongings, finally conceding to the evacuation order.

A firefighting helicopter dropped gallons of water onto burning homes but it appeared to have little impact.

Other stars have shared emotional posts about the devastation caused by the fires, including British actress Kate Beckinsale -who lived in the Palisades area, where the first fire broke out, for several years.

"I knew it would be bad - we had to evacuate many times during our life there - but the shock at the whole of the Palisades being destroyed is unthinkably horrific," she wrote on Instagram.

"My daughter and I lived there for most of her childhood and most of her childhood is gone."

Paris HiltonBilly CrystalDiane WarrenRicki LakeCary Elwes, and Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag have all confirmed the loss of their homes.

The homes of Eugene Levy, and Adam Brody and Leighton Meester, have also been destroyed, according to US media.

Here's what you need to know

It's midday in the UK, and 4am in Los Angeles - here's what you need to know.

Five people have died and many left injured after a series of wildfires that broke out in Los Angeles on Tuesday continue to burn out of control, in what fire chiefs called a "tragic" chapter for the city.

High winds up to 100mph have spread the flames and initially stopped firefighters from getting support from the air.

The winds that have been fuelling the blazes are beginning to drop, but it will be some time before the fires are brought under full control.

Some 130,000 people are now under mandatory evacuation orders across the city.

The Palisades fire to the south of the city is more than 17,200 acres, while the Eaton fire in Altadena and Pasadena is some than 10,600 acres in size.

The other blaze which started on Tuesday, the Hurst fire in Sylmar, is now 855 acres in size, but firefighters say it is 10% contained.

Overnight, the Sunset fire erupted in Hollywood Hills, near the Hollywood Bowl and kilometres from the famous Hollywood sign, and is currently around 43 acres big.

And finally the Lidia fire, which also began overnight, broke out near Acton and is now over 340 acres in size, but is 40% contained.

Five people are known to have been killed, all by the Eaton fire

There are also three blazes that have been put out or are under control.

The Woodley fire in Sepulveda Basin was "under control" before it grew beyond 30 acres, while a blaze that engulfed Hollywood's Studio City has now been extinguished, with no casualties.

Olivas fire, a small blaze that erupted in the brush of Ventura County (west of the Palisades and Malibu), was extinguished last night.

Trump blames Newsom as Biden cancels trips

Political fallout has begun before the flames have even been extinguished.

Joe Biden has cancelled what was set to be his final overseas trip as president to monitor the situation, while Donald Trump has blasted the California governor.

He claims it was Gavin Newsom's fault that firefighters have been complaining that some hydrants have run out of water needed to tackle the blazes.

LA restaurants give away food to those affected by fires

Some Los Angeles restaurants are offering free meals to first responders and residents forced to leave their homes.

"As so many have been displaced by the fires, if you find yourself displaced and in need of a meal, please join us, compliments," Bar Etoile, a restaurant in LA's East Hollywood neighbourhood, posted on Instagram.

Yeastie Boys Bagels wrote that its food trucks would be at locations in Silver Lake, Studio City, Melrose Place, Los Feliz, Venice, DTLA, Highland Park, despite its owner having had to evacuate his own home a few hours prior.

US non-profit World Central Kitchen is partnering with local restaurants and food trucks, and will continue to provide food at Pasadena Convention Centre, where have been evacuated.
