He last performed with them in 2015, announcing his retirement a few years later due to ill health.

In a statement online, his ex-bandmates described him as an "elder statesman" of British music.

Bassist and co-frontman JJ Burnel said: "After years of ill health, Jet has finally been released. He was a force of nature. An inspiration.

"The Stranglers would not have been if it wasn't for him. The most erudite of men. A rebel with many causes."

Sil Willcox, the band's manager, added: "Jet Black was the real deal. Astute in business, a talented drummer and an obsessive perfectionist.

"I will cherish the times we planned, pranked, ate, drank and laughed on so many great nights together."

Baz Warne, The Strangers guitarist, said: "I loved Jet. He took me under his wing over two decades ago and I never really came out from under it. I'm so very sad he's gone.

"He hadn't been too well for a while, but when I spoke to him most recently, three weeks ago, he was laughing and wanting to hear all the news, still interested and involved. It's been my privilege to have known and worked with him, and to have called him a friend, and I'll miss him until the end of my days. Rest in peace big man."

Taking to their official Twitter account, The Stranglers penned an emotional tribute to their bandmate.

It read: "It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our dear friend, colleague and band elder statesman Jet Black. Jet died peacefully at home surrounded by his family. Fond adieu, fly straight JB.x"

Fans flocked to comment on the post as they offered their condolences.

Eternal tweeted: "Jet was such a driving force for the stranglers in so many ways, always had so much to say, a very knowledgeable and funny man who was 'very good at quick roll on the skins' in fact he was the best."

So Nice In Paris commented: "Jet was the soul of the band. Fly straight Jet. See you there."

Hector wrote: "An absolute hero of mine, so many great beats, from perfectly simple to deceptively complex."

Lily offered: "Eternal happiness Jet you will be greatly missed and love and strength to the ones that love you so."

Larry added: "One of the best live acts ever. Adieu, JB."

The Stranglers formed in west Surrey in 1974 and went on to become an integral part of the riotous UK punk and new wave scenes.

He owned a fleet of ice cream vans and later an off-licence called The Jackpot.

In the early days, the Stranglers used one of the vans as a tour bus and his shop as their headquarters.

Jet said he never doubted the decision to shift his focus away from business and back to music.

"Once I had made the decision, and then the commitment, I then pretty much burnt my bridges, there was no turning back," he said.

"I told myself that one way or another I was going to succeed."
