Star Trek fans pay tribute to Kai Winn actress Louise Fletcher following death aged 88
Star Trek fans have come out in their droves to pay tribute to the late Louise Fletcher, celebrating her performance as the villainous Kai Winn in the franchise following her death.
In an announcement made by her son Andrew Bick, it was revealed that Fletcher – best-known for playing the dreaded Nurse Ratched in the 1975 film One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s nest – had died at the age of 88.
The Oscar-winning actress died from natural causes at her home in Montdurausse, France, having acted from the late 1950s up until her most recent on-screen role in the 2017 Netflix series Girlboss.
One of the roles for which she is being most remembered by fans is as Bajoran religious leader Kai Winn Adami in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, a character she played from 1993 to 1999.
In a statement posted on the Star Trek website, it recalled how Fletcher’s character was ‘cunning and ambitious’, having frequently gone up against Captain Sisko (Avery Brooks) and his crew throughout the series.
One fan paid homage to Fletcher’s performance on the show by tweeting: ‘Rest well Louise Fletcher. Thank you for Kai Winn, a legendary villain.’
‘Kai Winn is one of the top-tier villains of all time and it’s all due to Louise Fletcher. Rest well,’ someone else said.
‘I loved that I hated her character so much in DS9. What a legend. Rest in peace,’ another fan penned in her honour, while someone else stated: ‘RIP Kai Winn. Louise Fletcher did such an amazing job with this villain. We bid you farewell.’
In 2012, Fletcher spoke to StarTrek.com about her experience on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, which aired from 1993 to 1999, spanning seven seasons.
‘It was like playing a symphony for the 99th time,’ she said, revealing at the time that she was still receiving fan mail.
‘People are still interested. They still want your autograph. Or they’ll send those [trading] cards and ask you to sign them and send them back. I would say that my mail is 40% Cuckoo’s Nest, 40% Star Trek, and 20% other shows and movies. And that’s great.
‘I’m glad I did Star Trek. I’m so glad I’m part of that whole happening.’
A statement from Star Trek regarding Fletcher’s death read: ‘StarTrek.com is saddened to report the passing of Louise Fletcher.
‘Her contributions to the Star Trek universe will never be forgotten. #StarTrek #StarTrekFamily.’
