Sarah Michelle Gellar pays tribute after death of Buffy the Vampire Slayer co-star

Actor Camden Toy has died aged 68, with his co-star Sarah Michelle Gellar paying tribute.

The star was known for playing some of the scariest villains on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which aired from 1997 until 2003.

His death was reported by friends on Facebook.

Bethany Henderson, his partner, also said Toy was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer two years ago.

In a post shared on December 8, Henderson wrote: ‘For many reasons we were very hopeful for, at least, a longer and more fruitful time on planet Earth.

‘Unfortunately, it looks like we’ve reached the end of the road with the doctor’s treatment. His condition has declined a lot in the last two months and tremendously in the last several days.’

Henderson clarified that the late star had ‘many reasons’ for not sharing his illness publicly.

‘So, unfortunately, this may be new and shocking news to many of his fans,’ she added.

‘We both apologise for this and please know that he has appreciated you all so much, as have I!’

Following his death, Toy’s friends put together a Remembering Camden Toy page. 

Taking to Instagram, Gellar, 46, shared a photo of Toy in one of his villainous roles, saying it was an ‘honour’ to work with him.

Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Toy was keen to break into the entertainment industry from an early age, and moved to New York City where he was one of the founding members of the Nada Theatre. 

Toy later moved to Los Angeles and, after bagging Buffy the Vampire Slayer, soon became a hit among fans.

He was often in heavy prosthetics for the show, to the point where co-star Gellar – who played the lead Buffy Summers – once claimed that she had never seen his real face until a producer showed her a photo.

His characters included The Gentleman in the show’s Emmy-nominated fourth season in 1999.

Toy also played Gnarl in season 7 and the recurring Ubervamp in four more episodes.

He also played a new character called Prince of Lies in the Buffy spin-off, Angel, which aired between 1999 and 2000. 

As well as his creepy villains, Toy’s other roles included The Insider’s Guide to Film School, The Bay, Average Joe, and a voice role on Call of Duty: Vanguard.
