The Charlatans and Primal Scream star dead – Martin Duffy dies aged 55 as tributes pour in
Martin Duffy, best known for his roles in The Charlatans and Primal Scream, has died at the age of 55, leaving fans everywhere heartbroken.
Lead singer of The Charlatans, Tim Burgess, announced the sad news on his social media on Tuesday 20 December as he praised Martin's "beautiful soul" after sharing a picture of him.
"Another tragic loss of a beautiful soul. Martin Duffy stepped in to save The Charlatans when we lost Rob - he played with us at Knebworth and was a true friend," he wrote.
"He toured with me in my solo band too - he was a pleasure to spend time with. Safe travels Duffy," Tim continued, followed by a broken heart emoji.
Martin's cause of death has not been disclosed.
Oasis star Liam Gallagher was one of the first to respond to the news as he shared: "RIP DUFFY PRIMAL SCREAM DYA KNOW WHAT I MEAN LG x."
Fans have also flocked to Twitter to share their sadness over the news, especially after The Specials star Terry Hall also passed away.
"Ahh no , Terry Hall and now Duffy , I’m going back to bed as today is already a nightmare," one person wrote.
"More really sad news just before Christmas, a loss of a great talent at such a young age," another shared.
A third chimed: "Such sad news Tim, sorry for your loss and Rest easy Duffy." with a red rose emoji.
While a fourth added: "Awful news, sending my love to you, the band, and all the @ScreamOfficial team, thank you for the magic Duffy rest well fella x".
Born in Birmingham, Martin first found fame after joining the indie rock band Felt back in 1985, where he played the keyboards.
He also played the instrument on the first two albums of Primal Scream, which he joined permanently after Felt disbanded in 1989.
Martin stepped in to play with them, proving to be a huge hit despite the horrific news. He continued to play with the band, even contributing towards their fifth album.
